Three Days &
Three Nights

Gospels

I was going to take the different passages from Matthew, Mark, Luke & John and combine them for this study.
Well I only got through the first set before I put everything on the calendar.

Combined Text
And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus went before them: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve disciples apart in the way, and began to tell them what things should happen unto him from all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man that shall be accomplished. Saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed or delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles: And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and to crucify him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again. And they understood none of these things: and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken.

The first thing to take notice is that Jesus said it would be the third day here.
Lets look at the Jonah passage again.

Mat 12:40 "For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth."

If your in the grave three full days and three full nights would not you be raised on the fourth day?
Jesus was raised on the third day, that means he at least did not let the third day finish before he awoke.

I put two dates on the calendar.
The first one is our date.
The second one is for the Jews at evening, for their day changes before ours does.
Theirs starts at evening while ours don't change till midnight.

  • Lev 23:6 - Comment

    Lev 23:6

As seen in Ex 12:18 it says to start on the 14th.
But here in Lev 23:6 it says to start the 15th.
In Mat 26:17 and Mark 14:12 I guess starts your 14th.

So the way I see it Ex 12:18 has 8 days of Unleavened Bread beginning on the Passover then we continue 7 more days after that to finish Unleavened Bread. I have not gone into that study yet but that's what it looks like to me just by reading it.

  • Mark 15:25 - Comment

    Mark 15:25

This verse is out of harmony with the rest of the Gospels.
And even Mark itself. See Mark 15:34.
The third hour is much too early for the time of his crucifixion.
Maybe it fits here at Mat 27:01 which is about the third hour.

    The End
    Luke 24:20-21, Luke 24:46
    Unleavened Bread Ends
    Ex 12:18

So by looking at the scripture I think it's pretty plain that Jesus was not three days and three nights in the tomb.
But he did rise on the third day like he said.
This is again why I believe the story of Jonah has nothing to do with his death.
It has to do with Jesus ministry on earth.
